President IFAH and Pfizer Animal Health

  • Juan Ramón Alaix
      Juan-Ramón Alaix 

    • Juan Ramón Alaix is President of Pfizer Animal Health (PAH), a business unit of Pfizer Inc. Diversified Businesses. PAH is a world leader in the discovery, development and manufacture of veterinary vaccines and medicines for livestock and companion animals. 

      As president of PAH, a position he has held since September 2006, Juan Ramón is responsible for the overall strategic direction and financial performance of Pfizer Animal Health. Under his leadership, PAH grew to a $3.5 billion enterprise in 2010 with more than 5,000 employees in over sixty countries.

      In 2009, Pfizer Animal Health combined its business with Fort Dodge Animal Health, Wyeth’s animal health organization, establishing a more diversified and robust portfolio of products and services for PAH customers. In 2010, PAH expanded into four new areas including Generics as a result of the acquisition of Vetnex, the second largest AH company in India, Aquaculture as a result of the acquisition of Microtek, International Inc., Food Safety as a result of the global licensing agreement with Epitopix, and veterinary diagnostics as a result of the acquisition of Synbiotics.

      Prior to becoming President of PAH, Juan Ramón joined Pfizer from Pharmacia in 2003 as Regional President, Central/Southern Europe, Pfizer Global Pharmaceuticals. He has 30 years experience of increasing responsibility in finance, sales and management, including 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry. In the 1990s, Juan Ramón served in general management with Rhône-Poulenc Rorer in Spain and Belgium before becoming Country President of Spain for Pharmacia in 1998.

      A native of Spain, Juan Ramón received a graduate degree in economics from the Universidad de Madrid.

      Juan Ramón is a member of the board and executive committee of the International Federation for Animal Health (IFAH), an organization representing manufacturers of veterinary medicines, vaccines and other animal health products in both developed and emerging markets. In addition, he is a member of the board of the Spain U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

  • Barbara Freischem
      Barbara-Freischem 

    • The IFAH Executive Director, Barbara Freischem, leads the IFAH team, based in
      Brussels, Belgium. She has substantial experience in the animal health sector
      having served both industry and regulatory authorities.
      Ms. Freischem worked with Novartis Animal Health Inc as Global Head of
      Pharmacovigilance. Previously, she was a Scientific Administrator with the
      European Medicines Agency, having formerly served the German national agency
      for the authorisation of veterinary medicinal products as a Scientific Officer.
