London (UK), 15-16 November 2007

The epidemics over the past few years of diseases like avian influenza, foot and mouth or bluetongue have highlighted the importance of animal health for society at large and put the sector and its products into a sharper media focus.

The International Federation for Animal Health, IFAH, the European Medicines Agency, EMEA, and the Drug information Association, DIA, held the first Global conference on animal health on 15 November 2007. This event was the first international conference to ever convene high-level opinion leaders, decision-makers in the area of animal health: industry representatives, regulators, academia and other research organisations.

The conference addressed many important issues affecting the availability and future development of medicines for animals worldwide:

- The need to streamline animal health regulation, based on the particular nature of the sector
                                                                (USDA, European Commission, FDA)
- Creating a positive environment for innovation in veterinary medicines
(Canadian Veterinary Drugs Directorate, Australian APVMA, USDA, British Royal Veterinary College)
- The availability of veterinary medicines in less developed countries
(International Livestock Research Institute, Kenya )
- Limiting antimicrobials resistance by taking into account their use in both humans and animals
(OIE, IFAH, Elanco, World veterinary Association)
- Tackling existing and emerging diseases
                                                                (FAO, OIE)
- Are partnerships the answer?
